Remote journaling is a function of the IBM i that allows you to establish journals and journal receivers on a target system and associate them with specific journals and journal receivers on a source system. After the journals and journal receivers are established on both systems, the remote journal function can replicate journal entries from the source system to the journals and journal receivers located on the target system.

The remote journal function supports both synchronous and asynchronous modes of operation.

You should become familiar with the terminology used by the IBM i remote journal function. The Backup and Recovery and Journal management books are good sources for terminology and for information about considerations you should be aware of when you use remote journaling. The IBM redbooks AS/400 Remote Journal Function for High Availability and Data Replication (SG24-5189) and Striving for Optimal Journal Performance on DB2 Universal Database for iSeries (SG24-6286) provide an excellent overview of remote journaling in a high availability environment. You can find these books online at the IBM eServer iSeries Information Center.
