Before Address Fabric™ Data and PO Box data can be opened in QGIS, the data file must first be associated with the header file. A text editor capable of handling large files must be used for this operation. We recommend using EmEditor. EmEditor needs to be downgraded following installation in order to run it free mode. Follow this link for instructions on downgrading EmEditor.

To combine the header and data files:
  1. Open US_Address_Fabric_Header.txt in EmEditor
  2. Open us_address_fabric.txt in a new tab in EmEditor
  3. Copy the contents of the tab in which us_address_fabric.txt is open
  4. Paste this content into the tab in which US_Address_Fabric_Header.txt is open, below the header row
  5. Save the combined file as a type that can be opened in QGIS
  6. Click the Open Source Data Manager icon in the QGIS menu bar to open the Data Source Manager | Browser window
  7. Select the Delimited Text option in the Browser panel
  8. Click the Browse button and select the combined file. The file name will appear in the File Name field with an associated layer name.
  9. Select the Custom Delimiters option in the File Format section and enter a pipe character ( | ) in the Other delimiters text box. Note that the CSV (comma separated values) file format is selected.
  10. Select the First record has field names option in the Record and Fields Options section
  11. Select the No geometry (attribute only table) option in the Geometry Definitions section
  12. Click Add. Attribute data will be displayed in the QGIS window. The data is now ready for use.
